A visit with Husson University's School of Pharmacy

For the last few years, Nokomis science teacher Jamie Purnell has had a professor from Husson University's School of Pharmacy come to speak to her classes. Husson's pharmacy program "prepares students for rewarding careers in the diverse field of pharmacy through rigorous academic coursework and hands-on practical experience," and one of our own recent Nokomis alum is currently in their program! Husson returned once again on March 8th during period 2 to chat with Mrs. Purnell's Honors Lab Chemistry students and Ms. Briggs' Honors Biology students. Since we're family here at Warrior Nation, Mrs. Purnell was gracious enough to send an invitation a month in advance to invite any other students who were interested in attending.

Dr. Aaron Domina, an Associate Professor from Husson, Dr. Kelsie Snow, a pharmacist and assistant professor from Husson, and Katelyn Bois, who works with admissions, came to talk about Husson's Pharmacy program. They did a little demonstration of what pharmacists do and explained the different options available to pharmacists upon graduation. However, the presentation was more than just an overview of careers in the field of pharmacy, and students learned about safe medication use an how to keep themselves and their families safe.

Here is what Brianna Townsend (Class of 2023) had to say about the experience:

"Although I am not necessarily interested in pursuing a career in Pharmacy, the presentation was still very insightful. We learned about questions to consider before taking medications, what pharmacists do, and the education needed to become a pharmacist, whether that is a community, acute, ambulatory, or hospital pharmacist. The speakers were thorough and interactive to keep everyone engaged regardless of interest level. Plus, the information taught us to be smart before consuming medications in our lives and the lives of our loved ones. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the presentation and hope my peers shared that same sentiment."

Would you be interested in chatting with Nokomis students about career and life connections?
